What is desktop publishing?

Our first lesson will be to explore what this is and look at the careers associated with it. Look at the first assignment using a website from the Dept. of Labor.

1. Using Word to create a newsletter about J. Bruce Llewellyn (pgs.1-5)

  • Learning goal: to learn how to create a a newsletter with columns and justification.

2. Using Word to create a flyer for a Music Store (pgs. 6-10)

  • Learning goal: to learn how to create a flyer with WordArt, insert a page border and insert graphics that are wrapped "in front of text"

3. Using Word to create a menu for a Restaurant (pgs. 11-14)

  • Learning goal: to learn how to create 2 columns "from this point forward", set tabs, use vertical centering, insert a page border, and insert graphics that are wrapped "in front of text"

4. Review of what you have learned by creating your schedule at school (pgs.15-17)
  • Learning goal: to learn how to use Word Art, set tabs that are left, center, and right justified, insert a page border, use vertical centering, and insert graphics that are wrapped "in front of text".

5. Using Word to create a Table of Contents for a book (pgs. 18-20)
  • Learning goal: to learn how to create a table of contents using tabs with dot leaders, inserting a page border, using vertical centering, and inserting wordart.

6. Create your Resume ... a very important document to keep and update, can be used for jobs and colleges. (pgs. 21-26)
  • Learning goal: to learn what a resume is and the purpose of one, to learn what to put into a resume and how to format the information so it looks professional.


7. Switch to Microsoft Publisher and create a flyer for a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for the x-country team. (pgs. 27-29)
  • Learning goal: To learn how to use a template, create a vertical text, use text boxes for the text and graphics.

8. Using Publisher, create a 4 pg. menu for a restaurant (pgs. 30-35)
  • Learning goal: To learn how to create a 4 page menu, use text boxes for text and graphics, use Grow to fit in a table, print on two sided flip.

9. Using Publisher, create a business card for yourself as a partner in a business. (pgs. 39-42)
  • Learning goal: To learn how to create a business card that has correct information and a logo and to learn how to set up
    the page setup so it will print many copies on one page.

10. Using Publisher, create a CD case label for a CD of your choice. (pgs. 43-44)
  • Learning goal: To learn how to create a CD cover with the correct information and to create text and rotate
    it so it is vertical.

11. Using Publisher, create a 4 page newsletter about Technology.
  • Learning goal: To learn how to create a newsletter, understand and create a masthead of a paper, summarize articles, create a table of contents, create a dropcap letter, and connect text boxes.

FInd 8 articles that you want to write about, remembering NOT to copy and paste. It must be articles that you have put into your own words. (pgs. 45-51) You can print out your articles and use a highlighter or use my summary sheet for each article. Note: you have 8 articles to summarize for this newsletter

12. Using Publisher, create a program about the Sports Banquet for McCaskey.
  • Learning goal: To learn how to create a program, change a watermark on the page, create text boxes, and insert photos.



13. Using Publisher, create a brochure on Choosing a Personal Computer. Not only will you learn how to create a brochure, but will learn terminlogy about choosing a PC. (pgs. 52-62)
  • Learning goal: To learn how to create a brochure, make a mock-up of a plan, change line spacing, rearrange text boxes so text fits attractively with any graphics.

14. Use Publisher to create a Postcard of your favorite vacation spot. Read Pgs. 63-64 to create this postcard.
  • Learning goal: To learn how to create a postcard, use text boxes with color, use the 5 W's for information and to use good design with "white space".


15. Using Publisher, create a flyer that has tear-offs which is a tab that can be easily torn off. Tear-off's can be easily edited using Publisher's sychronization tool. Use pgs. 115-119 for instructions.
  • Learning goal: To learn what a tear-off flyer is and its purpose, to use grid lines, use bullets from Wingdings group, use design gallery object for tear-off and create a flyer.

16. Using Publisher, create a coupon mailer used by merchants and businesses as a way to attract customers and to track the effectiveness of advertising. Use pgs. 120-124 for instructions.
  • Learning goal: To learn to create a coupon, use grid lines, use bullets from the format menu, use symbols and use design gallery objects.

17. You have been hired as a publications director for a cruise ship. Using Publisher, create a new logo for the cruise ship, a tri-fold brochure to advertise both the ship and one particular cruise destination and a postcard for the cruisers when they cruise.
  • Learning goal: To use what you have learned to create an informational brochure, using good design principles, and text boxes with graphics.
